An affluent community located south of the main body of the city of Newport Beach, Newport Coast was a separate census-designated place in Orange County until it was annexed into Newport Beach in 2001. With a population of around 10,000 people, the master-planned community was developed by Irvine Company. A private company headquartered in Newport Center, the Irvine company was responsible for the planning of the city of Irvine, which is home to around 250,000 people. The company also owns many office properties in the Irvine and Newport Center areas as well as the Fox Plaza in Los Angeles and the MetLife Building in New York City.
