Gilbert was established in 1902 by William ?Bobby? Gilbert who sold land to the Arizona Eastern Railway to build a rail line from Phoenix to Kelvin, Arizona. In 1912 many Mormons fleeing Pancho Villa in Mexico settled in Gilbert. Gilbert was officially incorporated in 1920 and was originally a farming community that prospered because of the rail line and the construction of the Eastern and Consolidated Canals and the Roosevelt Dam. The town remained an agricultural community until the 1970s and 1980s when the town council annexed 53 square miles of land. The population of Gilbert grew exponentially after that. In 1970, Gilbert had just under 2,000 residents. Now, the town is home to 250,000 and keeps growing. Gilbert celebrated its 100th anniversary in July 2020, and experts forecast that the population will grow to 330,000 over the next decade.
