Check their online reviews, verify their credentials, and beware of any company that requires a large deposit. Also, ask about their COVID-19 policies to ensure that all contact is minimized and they are following the current CDC guidelines.

Make a plan for donations

Part of the moving process for most people involves de-cluttering. There?s no reason to move items from one home to another that you don?t need or use. But be aware that many organizations have made changes to when and how they accept donations. Don?t assume that you can show up to Goodwill with a car full of boxes. Find out what charities are accepting donations and follow the guidelines they outline for ensuring that items are clean and sanitized.

Pack yourself using new boxes

Although it?s easy to score used boxes for your move, during these times it?s best to use new boxes. And opt for cardboard instead of plastic — the virus will only last one day on carboard, but can live for up to three days on plastic. Also plan on packing your own boxes if possible. The fewer people who touch your belongings during the move, the safer you and your family will be.

Clean and disinfect

Before, during, and after your move, you should thoroughly clean and disinfect. This includes doorknobs, cabinet pulls, light switches, and any other frequently touched surfaces. Wear a mask and gloves at all times. If possible, keep windows and doors open to maximize airflow. Once all your items have arrived at the new house, try to wait at least three days before unpacking. If not, clean and disinfect all items as you unpack them. You should also pack an ?open first? box that you pack yourself that contains all the essential items you?ll need on the first couple of nights in your new home.
