Encinitas is situated approximately 25 miles north of San Diego and 95 miles south of Los Angeles. It has a population of about 60,000 and is nestled between the cities of Solana Beach and Carlsbad. Encinitas history

The city?s name means ?little oaks? in Spanish. The area now known as Encinitas was first inhabited by the San Dieguitos, the Dieguenos, and the La Jollans. The first expedition to the area was led by Gaspar de Portola, the governor of Baja California, in 1669. In 1881, Jabez Pitcher settle in the town and is considered the father of Encinitas. The city was incorporated in 1986.

Encinitas has something for everyone. The city has six miles of pristine beaches and has a reputation for some of the best surfing conditions in the country. In fact, Swami?s is a popular surf break in Encinitas that was immortalized in the Beach Boys? classic song ?Surfin? USA?. Moonlight State Beach is popular with families and offers a large sandy area, playground, fire pits, volleyball courts, snack bar, and plenty of parking.

The city also lives up to its nickname as the ?Flower Capital of the World?. It is home to the San Diego Botanic Garden where you?ll find nearly 4,000 kinds of plants from around the globe. You can also enjoy endless birdwatching at the San Elijo Lagoon, where 40 percent of North American birds pass through on their annual migrations.

This championship, 18-hole course features unbeatable panoramic ocean views and accommodates golfers of all levels. Or spend the afternoon wandering around the 100-year-old Downtown 101 coastal shopping district. Here you?ll find cute little shops, upscale restaurants, and beautiful historic architecture.

The city also hosts many fun festivals and events throughout the year including the April Street Fair, the Encinitas Bazaar Marketplace, the Lima Bean Faire and Battle of the Beans Cook-off, Fall Festival, the Wavecrest Woodie Meet, and the Switchfoot Bro-Am — an annual free surfing competition.

Students in Encinitas are served by three highly-rated school districts — Cardiff School District, Encinitas Union School District, e Distretto scolastico dell'Unione San Dieguito.
