The history of Del Mar dates back to the 1880s when Theodore Loop built train tracks in the area that is now Del Mar. Taylor built 40 small houses, a schoolhouse, a train depot, and the area?s first resort. Unfortunately, fire consumed the hotel five years later and Taylor abandoned the town. In 1900, the South Coast Land Company purchased land and built a world-class hotel that opened in 1909. It attracted Hollywood?s silent film stars and experienced tremendous growth over the next 20 years. The Del Mar Fairgrounds opened in 1936 with the racetrack following the year after. For decades crowds have gathered in Del Mar, and the city was incorporated in 1959.

One of the most popular destinations in Del Mar is the Circuit automobile de Del Mar where visitors can enjoy thoroughbred horseracing. The stadium dates back to 1937 when Hollywood legend Bing Crosby would greet guests at the gate. Del Mar is also home to the Del Mar Fairgrounds which hosts the San Diego County Fair every summer.
