Coachella history

Originally founded as Woodspur in 1876 when the Southern Pacific Railroad built a rail siding in the area, it was renamed Coachella in 1901 by its residents. While the origins of the city?s name are unclear, it is thought to be named after conchilla, the Spanish name for the snail shells found in the area?s soil. Coachella officially became a city in 1946 and began to expand its boundaries in the 1950s to include nearby corporate farms and fruit groves. The city?s official languages are both English and Spanish, and roughly 90 percent of the population speaks Spanish.
