Exploring the Corona del Mar Community

Considered to be one of the most beautiful areas in the Southern California coastline, Corona del Mar boarders the Newport Coast and the Crystal Cove communities of Newport Beach. Located within the Newport Beach city limits and with a name that translates to mean “Crown of the Sea,” the neighborhood offers the charm and personality of a sophisticated beach town.

Corona Del Mar Amenities

Residents of Corona del Mar enjoy access to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Among these are those found at Corona del Mar State Beach and Crystal Cove State Park. Corona del Mar is also known for its cliffside views, tidepools and quaint village shops. Other points of interest within the neighborhood include the Sherman Library and Gardens and Fashion Island.

Corona Del Mar is also the home to a number of popular area events, including the sandcastle contest that has taken place in the community every September for over 40 years. The annual 5K race in June also attracts people from all over the world each year.

Corona del Mar History

Settled in the early 20th century, Corona del Mar generally consists of the land on the seaward face of the San Joaquin Hills south of Avocado Avenue to the city limits. The older portion of Corona del Mar consists mostly of free-standing, closely spaced, detached single-family homes of varying architecture with most homes concentrated along the Pacific Coast Highway. Some of the newer developments in the neighborhood feature ranch style houses, many of which boast views of the ocean.

While Corona del Mar does not have a locally administered municipal government, it does have a representative on the Newport Beach City Council with municipal services provided by the city. In addition, while the neighborhood is technically within Newport Beach city limits, the post office does accept mailing addresses for Corona del Mar for those homes located in the 92625 ZIP code.

Exploring Newport Beach

Located within the city of Newport Beach, the community of Corona del Mar has a population of around 13,400 people. By contrast, the city of Newport Beach has a population of more than 85,000. An affluent city, Newport Beach boasts households with a median family income that is among the highest in the country. According to a study released in 2010, more than a quarter of households in Newport Beach have an income that is greater than $200,000. The same study also found that the median value of a home in Newport Beach is $1 million.

Residents of Corona del Mar enjoy the same mid-latitude semi-arid climate that is found throughout the city of Newport Beach. Thanks to the Pacific Ocean, temperatures remain cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. As such, the region experiences less temperature fluctuation than cities that are located a few miles inland. While the climate has some characteristics that are similar to a Mediterranean climate, the area does not receive enough precipitation to qualify as having a true Mediterranean climate.
